What you can do until help arrives

Following any water damage incident, prioritize your safety above all else:

  1. Assess the safety of staying in your residence.
  2. Be vigilant about potential electrical and "slip and fall" hazards.
  3. Limit activities to those that are safe for you to undertake.
  4. Exercise caution, as wet materials can be exceptionally heavy.

What to Do After Experiencing Flooding:

  1. Remove excess water through mopping and blotting.
  2. Wipe off any remaining water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  3. Prop up wet upholstery and cushions for effective drying.
  4. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  5. Utilize air conditioning to expedite the drying process in the summer.
  6. Take colored rugs away from wet carpeting.
  7. Safely relocate art objects to a dry area.
  8. Collect loose items from the floors.

What NOT to Do After Flooding:

  1. Avoid leaving wet fabrics in place; hang furs and leather goods.
  2. Refrain from leaving books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  3. Do not use your household vacuum to extract water.
  4. Keep away from using television or other household appliances.
  5. Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and steer clear of rooms with sagging ceilings.

  • Gather loose items from floors.
